Eggleston (E)

The name of a village in the hills south of Roseau in the parish of St. George. In early records it appears as Eccleston which is a place in Lancashire and Merseyside in England. Soon however we see it as Eggleston. James and later Thomas Bell were the 19th century English owners of Eggleston and Morne Desmoulins. The estate grew sugar and provisions. As was the custom, the community which grew up and around the original estate house of Eggleston became known as "Kai Bell" (Bell's House). Several of Messrs. Bell's descendants still live at Eggleston and at neighbouring Giraudel.
